Real Life; Spiritual Life

Human beings are spiritual creatures, and the care of our souls is essential to our well-being. St John's offers a variety of ways to connect to a rich tradition of learning, theological reflection, study, and practice -- all of which are ways of deepening our connection to God. Our classes, small groups, book groups, and workshops are designed to welcome people at all levels of experience and interest. We relish good discussion, honest questions, and open minds. See below for details on upcoming offerings.

CLASSES AND STUDY FOR FALL 2010

WISE AND WILD:
Bible Study for Adults and Teens
Wednesday evenings, beginning Sept 15
Bible Study from 7pm to 8pm
Evening Prayer from 8pm to 8:30
Free and open to all

This Fall St John’s is reviving a venerable old Church tradition — but with a twist. For generations, Wednesday night Bible study has been a staple of old-time church communities. We’re assuming that there’s something in that tradition that’s worth hanging onto. But we’d like to expand the tradition by incorporating an intergenerational dynamic to the work. Youth will meet with their mentors while adults gather together with a leader to guide conversation. Each group will conduct a Bible study on the same text, and then we’ll come together for a common prayer service to close the evening, including shared reflection on the text we’ve been studying.

Our sincerest hope is that by bringing elders, adults, and youth together, we will produce a synergy of theological reflection that no single group could achieve on its own. Will the elders in our community speak wisdom to the young people? Will the young people inspire the elders with their wild ideas? Come and find out.

We’ll begin September 15 with the opening verses of the Gospel of Mark. You don’t need to have any experience reading the Bible, you don’t need to have prepared anything in advance. Just come with an open heart and a commitment to listen and be heard, and join the venerable tradition of discovering the Pearls of Great Price buried in Holy Scripture.

CREATION TO COVENANT:
The Stories of The Book of Genesis

Mondays beginning September 13
10am –noon
Free and open to all.

Join us this Fall for an exploration of some of the most well-known and best-loved stories from the Bible. The Book of Genesis is packed with stories that we’ve heard many times, but may not have had the chance to explore for meaning. Each two-hour class will include viewing of a half-hour DVD lecture by Rutgers University professor Gary Rendsburg, as well as supplemental material and discussion led by Fr. Steve. This class is free and open to all, and will last for 12 sessions, concluding on December 13.
